Clinician Support

Occupational Therapy– KSD currently does not have OT services.

A pediatric occupational therapist is someone who helps children engage in activities of daily living. This can involve fine motor development (manipulating a pencil, printing and writing), self-regulation (recognizing feelings and emotions within themselves and learning to adjust their responses in order to be ready to learn and engage with others), social skills (developing flexible thinking and encouraging social problem solving), and executive functioning skills (planning, organization, working memory). If you have concerns regarding your child in these areas, please contact your child’s teacher.

Speech and Language – KSD currently has limited services with Back Forty Speech Services and Bushel Group in Winnipeg.

Your child may benefit from Speech and Language Services if they are not speaking, if their speech is difficult to understand, or if they are missing specific sounds. They may also benefit if English is not their first language, or if their vocabulary or speech patterns are not age-appropriate. Occasionally concerns arise with a child’s ability to understand spoken language in comparison with their ability to speak it. This can at times interfere with learning.  If you have questions or concerns about your child’s speech or language please discuss them with your child’s teacher.

KSD currently does not have a School Psychologist, and has very limited access to a Physiotherapist through the RHA. If you would like to have your child assessed by these clinicians, please discuss with your child’s teacher.

Navigating the school system with a child with additional needs: Parents are valued partners in education in Manitoba. As parents, you know your child’s strengths, abilities, needs and challenges, and, as a result, you have a vital role in the education of your child. Your participation in planning for education and your ongoing involvement and support will make a positive and meaningful contribution to your child’s education. For more information regarding your role in your child’s education, please follow this link to Manitoba Education’s  document “Working Together: A Handbook for Parents od Children with Special Needs in School”, or contact your school’s resource teachers, Lynda Geswin or Jen Mathews to obtain a paper copy.
